Zusatzraum by Exilhäuser Architekten

The German word 'Zusatzraum' (additional space) is as good a definition as any of 'annex' - a structure erected to supplement existing buildings. Provided that certain stipulations regarding construction and size are complied with, Bavarian building regulations permit structures of this type to be erected without planning permission on sites designated as building land. The 'Zusatzraum' that stood in Messestadt from 17 April to 1 August 2001 was such a structure. It was designed by 'exilhäuser architekten' (Exile Homes Architects), a group of young architects consisting of Bibi Kammerl, Katrin Aldenhoven and Eik Kammerl. Taking the opportunities offered by the building regulations as their point of departure, they paid homage to a feature of contemporary society that is becoming ever more important: increased mobility.

'Zusatzraum' is a simple unit for living, sleeping and working that can be added quickly to homes and offices. It can be attached to a larger building or placed free-standing in a garden or a street, pointing in this way to innovative forms of combining living and working.

The mini-building is 4 metres long, 2 metres wide and 3.5 metres high and has a 'terrace' on its two sides. It is divided into three sections: a workspace, a sleeping area above this and a 'hall' that occupies the full height of the structure. Two load-bearing wooden walls at the ends and steel members dividing up the side walls guarantee the stability of 'Zusatzraum'. The side walls consist of sheets of transparent red acrylic glass, half of which can be opened. The inside is lined with walnut into which are built all the electronics, a folding table, shelves and lights. The space is provided with electricity and with telephone connections. Interior lighting is regulated by a dimmer, which affects the strength of the light visible from the outside and alters the sculptural character of 'Zusatzraum'.

'Exilhäuser architekten' devised 'Zusatzraum' in connection with Plan 2000, a forum for contemporary architecture held in Cologne. It was being used for the first time in Messestadt, where it served as a temporary artist's studio, an exhibition space and an information centre.
