Opinions 2002

Exciting, unconventional, challenging and informative art that’s right outside your front door or, if you want, inside it – an amazing, all-year-round special offer for residents of Messestadt and anyone else who’s interested. Art here encounters enthusiastic, astonished and active followers.
(Theo Bauernschmidt, Urban Planning Department)

What I really like about kunstprojekte_riem is how the projects involve residents. So I particularly enjoyed Angela Dorrer’s project with the PEM cases and the activities of Kathrin Böhm and Stefan Saffer. Messestadt residents are incorporated in the works of art, and by becoming part and parcel of them they discover that art can be fun. That’s an advantage we have over other parts of town.
(Theresia Gutmann-Tardt, Messestadt resident)

If kunstprojekte_riem didn’t exist, they’d have to be invented. The ‘Wohnwelten’ [residential worlds] were particularly successful in terms of organisation and results. It’s difficult to think of another project in which ordinary people could take such an active part in artistic activities, even to the extent of involving their domestic surroundings. The future projects also look interesting – not just for the initiated, but also for ordinary citizens.
(Georg Kronawitter, Trudering Cultural Association)

kunstprojekte_riem is interesting. It bypasses the sites customarily occupied by art in public places and explores art as a means of developing new urban spaces. The temporary approach is unusual, exciting and various. It should be supplemented by a project or two that create permanent (artistic) spaces for communication in Messestadt.
(Fred Wimmer, curator)

Art can take place anywhere. We know that. But if we want to find out what art can and should contribute to contexts other than its own we need a framework that creates opportunities – projects that take us to street corners, specialist conferences, kitchen tables and town halls.
I think it’s very important to bring together different things in different places – various interests and features, the interpersonal and the official. kunstprojekte_riem opens and negotiates such spaces for art, spaces in which everyone involved can join together to turn ideas into new experiences.
