kunstprojekte_riem invites you to attend the unveiling of Herz, Hand, Mund ('Heart, Hand, Mouth'), Stadtzeichen ('city markers') created by Renata Stih and Frieder Schnock for Munich's new suburb, Messestadt. The three luminous objects are being set up at three different locations in the area. Six metres high, they are not just things to be looked at; they also address the viewer. Herz, Hand, Mund will provide new points of orientation for residents in urban surroundings that are in a continual state of flux. The objects relate not only to the specifics of their individual sites, but also to the local population's expectations of Messestadt as a place to live and to their ideas about art.
Stih and Schnock's three objects all have a human focus: the heart symbolises feelings, the hand actions and the mouth language. Mund marks the point at which the residential area and the trade-fair grounds meet. The electronic text that appears between the mouth's lips gives expression to everyday concerns or names items on a shopping list: 'War der Hund draussen?' ('Have you taken the dog out?'), 'Wo ist meine Brille?' ('Where are my glasses?'), 'Pommes Frites, Petersilie, Oregano' ('chips, parsley, oregano'). Hand, installed in the industrial area and surrounded by brightly coloured boards, refers to the commercial and industrial activity taking place around it, while Herz pulsates in a way recalling the beating of a heart. Its luminous lettering touches on our dreams, ideals and fears: 'Niemand mag mich' ('No one likes me'), 'Ich bin toll' ('I'm the greatest').
